70,000 ebooks now available via Milner

Posted by Bruce Stoffel on December 14, 2011

Milner Library now provides access to over 70,000 ebooks through a resource called Academic Complete.  Academic Complete covers all disciplines and includes nearly 900 titles related to psychology. Academic Complete supports full-text searching across all books in the database and within specific ebooks.  Books can be viewed by any web browser on any device, with options to highlight, bookmark, and download.

Academic Complete does not currently include books published by the American Psychological Association.

Ebook publishing is common in the popular literature market but is just now beginning to gain a significant share of the academic publishing market. Academic Complete is just one of several new sources of academic literature in ebook format. To help the library decide which sources to purchase, please feel free to send me any comments you have about Academic Complete or about ebook formats and features most useful to you.

RefWorks 2.0 versus RefWorks Classic

Posted by Bruce Stoffel on August 26, 2011

The default version of RefWorks linked from the library RefWorks page has been changed to the new version of RefWorks, called RefWorks 2.0.  For a summary of differences between RefWorks 2.0 and the older version and for instructions for switching from one version to the other, view this brief demonstration video.

What’s new at Milner, fall 2011

Posted by Bruce Stoffel on August 16, 2011

Whether you are a new or returning member of our ISU community, welcome to ISU and to Milner Library.

Several changes have occurred at the library since the end of the Spring 2011 term.  All are intended to improve the quality of resources and services in support of your research.

About 40 percent of our collection of books and print journals on Floor 3 were relocated over the summer to the Storage Basement facility.  This change was made to provide additional space for group study and for a planned cultural center in that location. Psychology materials (in the BF classification area) are in the same location as last year on the north side of Floor 3 but are fewer in number.  High use items have been retained on the floor.  Lower-use items have been relocated to our Storage Basement facility.  Storage materials may be requested in the Milner Catalog using the Request Item function associated with full item records.  We continue to retrieve requested storage materials for you throughout the day, usually every hour on the half hour.  Contact the Milner reference desk staff for assistance.

Our collection of DVDs is now located on the main floor, northeast corner.  Viewing equipment is located there as well.  All multimedia course reserve materials are now located at the course reserves desk in the lobby.

Four podcasting stations are now available on Floor 4.  The stations are available on a first come/first served basis for production of audio and video casts using standard Mac equipment.  Contact the circulation desk in the lobby for details and to check out peripherals.

Collaboration stations are now available on Floors 2, 3, and 4.  Each station is equipped with a monitor and hookups for laptops or other mobile devices.  The screen of any of the devices hooked into the station can be displayed on the monitor at the click of a button.  Stations with up to ten hookups are planned for later this year.

Designation of individual quiet study and group study spaces has changed.  Floor 5 is now the designated individual quiet study floor.  On that floor we ask that conversations (including phone) be moved to the central stairwell and that the earbud volume be kept low.  Group study, including group conversation, is now available on all floors other than 5.

And regarding the central stairwell, you may notice quite a change.  Over the summer the stairwell was painted and re-carpeted, resulting in a fresh, clean look.  New chairs and tables have replaced much of the older furniture as well.  The furniture models were selected by vote of library patrons last fall.

Most psychology resources remain unchanged from last spring.  One exception is the Counseling and Therapy in Video streaming video database, which has been canceled.  This fall we will be testing a replacement streaming video service sponsored by the American Psychological Association as well as a new online full-text tests and measures database.

RefWorks users will notice a change in our default RefWorks interface.  After a year of development and testing, RefWorks has introduced as its default interface RefWorks 2.0.  For those wanting to continue with the older RefWorks Classic version, it will remain available through December.  Feel free to contact me if you have questions about RefWorks changes or if you would like to schedule a one-on-one consultation for help getting started with the service.  We can also provide training on use of EndNote Web and Zotero (a free, open-source product).

For those needing to conduct statistical analyses, the Milner Computer Lab (main floor) is now running version 19 of SPSS, the same version available in the DeGarmo lab.

We continue our transition from print to electronic books as the academic publishing market allows and plan to add several journal titles to our online collection later in the fall.   We also plan to test a new book purchasing model this year in which you, our patrons, will decide what materials will be added to our collection.

Most of these changes were made in response to comments and suggestions we received from library patrons in recent years. Please keep your suggestions coming so we can continue to improve and expand the resources and services we offer.

Again, welcome.  Have a great semester!

Relocation of Floor 3 psychology collection underway

Posted by Bruce Stoffel on July 1, 2011

Approximately half of the psychology collection on Milner Floor 3 will be relocated from the floor before the start of the fall term to provide space for a new cultural center.  Psychology materials remaining on the floor will be shifted slightly to the west of their current location.

Shelving on the south side of Floor 3 will be removed to provide space for the cultural center.  Collections on the floor will be shifted to the north and northeast sectors of the floor.  Additional shelving will be installed in the northwest and northeast corners to accommodate the shift.  Some materials will be relocated to the Storage Basement facility, and some may be withdrawn.

During this project you may encounter books with routing flags.  Please feel free to use these books, but please retain the flags with them.  You may also encounter difficulties locating materials that, according to the library catalog, should be available to you.  If that happens, please feel free to contact folks at the reference desk in the lobby for assistance.

This is among the first initiatives announced by Library Dean Sohair Wastawy soon after she arrived on campus last June (2010).  The cultural center is expected to include five interactive exhibit spaces utilizing state-of-the-art electronic media.  Details have not yet been finalized, pending discussions with stakeholders.  The project is to be phased over time, as it will require fundraising.

Let me know if you have questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions.
